Finally!

Finally!  Business cards have arrived!  Here is a sample of our generic one.  Mine, of course, has my info and cell….didn’t want to display that to the masses.  The LC side is glossy, and the name side is matte.  Love it.

Person of the week

My person of the week is….Tom Spellman.  Simple because the man loves doing what he does so much, he’s crazy enough to stand out in the rain and park cars.  No wait, let’s back up.  He’s crazy enough to show up at 6:00 AM; crazy enough to put out all the banners and yard signs in a torrential downpour; crazy enough to park cars in a torrential downpour; crazy enough to walk everybody from their car in the torrential downpour with an umbrella; crazy enough to stay till 1:30 every Sunday to help us tear down.  The dude was soaked.  And when I say torrential downpour, it was like Texas rain – all morning long.  Love having people who are crazy for this community, crazy for our church, and crazy for Christ. Thanks Tom!

Quarter Life Crisis

For some reason, I’ve been wanting to mess with my hair lately.  Couple of weeks ago I dyed it red.  Supposed to be permanent but it’s seems to have tamed down a little.  Now I’m a very sexy auburn.

And I’ve been trying to let it grow out.  I hate growing out my hair – HATE.  My hair is very curly.  It got to the point where I was having to use a diffuser.  And if I didn’t put enough stuff in it (stuff = product), it turned into an afro.  Huge.  So then I decided to try and straighten it.  Jennifer used a curling iron.  It worked, but a couple of burns later I abandoned that whole approach.  Now we’ve moved to a flat iron.  And I’m kinda digging it.  Only bad thing is – takes me longer to do my hair than my wife.  Wow that’s sad.

Testing 1,2,3

Today Jennifer and I headed to Charlottesville for tests.  Fun stuff.  Suck my blood.  Suck her blood.  See if her belly looks like it should.  See if my guys do what they’re supposed to do.  Good grief.  And they test us for Herpamonogonariasyphilaids.  Which I’m sure we don’t have.

Cool thing is I saw a guy walk into the office to show his parents a poloroid of 2 embryos they had just implanted into his wife.  Man I remember that day.  I was able to show him Wyatt and say I had a picture just like that of him.

So as it stands now, we should start shots on the 3rd and possibly do the egg retrieval and fertilization on the 12th.  Sucky thing is I’ll be out of town May 4-7, so Jennifer has to shoot herself in the belly.  And on the 3rd, our house begins to look like a drug store – or a crack house, whichever you prefer.  A whole cabinet is dedicated to shot supplies and drugs.  I’ll list them later when I figure out what they are.  Cool thing is we..I mean she, gets valium.  More on that later.  The drugs are a huge part of the cost.  But it’s like Christmas when they show up.  It’d all done mail-order.

And, Jennifer and I were thinking we’ll probably know by the end of May if we’re pregnant AND if we’re having twins.  Oh, forgot to mention that.  They’ll put 2 in.

Need a bigger car.

Change

‘Some things have got to change around here!’

Change is inevitable.  If you aren’t changing, chances are you’re dead.

We’ve made a few shuffles here at Lifepoint to help with the work load and move people into their giftedness.  It first began with this – Pastor Daniel isn’t gifted in administration.  He needs to focus on leading the church, studying, and preaching God’s word – not dealing with the electric bill.

Me on the other hand, I’m very detail oriented.  Yes I have messy desk.  Yes I’m musical.  But I did well in music theory because it is very mathematical – very pattern oriented.  I like patterns.  I like it that 1+1 always equals 2.  I didn’t like English because the tests were so subjective.  They couldn’t convince me that their answer was right because to me it was debatable.  2×2 isn’t debatable.  It’s 4.  Don’t mess with me.  So I like paying bills, and balancing the check book and things like that.  So I took over the Admin stuff.  Now I’m Admin in addition to the other 10 hats I wear?  Not going to work.

Josh on the other hand is very creative.  Not musical, but creative.  So he is now our creative director.  And he is amazing at it.  His responsibilities include conceptualizing the series package, crafting the Sunday morning service, and all the design stuff that it includes.  Additionally, he is now the Downtown campus Pastor.

So who took over Kidspoint?  Ben Weiss was a clear choice.  His heart bleeds kids.  He is always thinking into the future and challenging himself to find better ways to connect with kids and impact their lives with the life of Christ.

So for me, I have taken more of a Service Programming Manager position modeled after Northpoint.  I just happen to be the worship leader as well.  So far it is working like a dream.  I can already see how the giftedness of everybody is coming out.  Great stuff!

Easter ’08

Better late than never.  Wanted to update you on Easter.

Amazing.

There you go.  End of post.

Just kidding.  Honestly, it was incredible.  We had 674 – blew us away.  First time we ever had 3 services.  Everything went smoothly.  Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 people accepted Christ!  I can’t believe how much God is blessing our church.  Amazing.  Have I said that already?

A Rare Peak Into Our Life

Very long post, but worth it.

What you are about to read is a VERY rare look into Jennifer and I’s life.  I tend to spew personal details and Jennifer is very private.  So this will be good therapy for me.  And yes, this was Jennifer’s idea.  I’m excited!  Here is goes!

Who you see here is a product of IVF.  And his name is Wyatt.  He is the best thing that has ever happened to us.  If you want to know more about his beginnings, you can read it here.  Of course it was a dramatic experience.  But God protected Jennifer and Wyatt, and through it we have been blessed.

Well, in February, we tried to get pregnant with the 3rd baby which was in cryofreeze.  We only had 3 successful fertilized and viable eggs – 1 was Wyatt, the other a tubal, and this was the third.  Sadly, upon thawing, the embryo didn’t survive.  This has led us to a lot of prayer and searching about what to do next.  We know we want adopt in the future, but we also wanted to have a few more children biologically.  Seeing how adoption is twice as much as IVF we have decided to have more babies.

This is where you come in.  We have decided to let you in on the process.  As we learn stuff we’ll post it here for you to read.  If you are a Lifepointer, we only ask that you don’t ask us in person how things are going.  500 people asking you the same thing could become taxing.  We promise to post here!  Prayerfully, in 10 months we’ll have another baby…maybe 2!  Jennifer went yesterday for her first blood tests and the journey has begun.

Now I just need to figure out how to put a tip jar at the bottom so you all can contribute to the Pickwell IVF fund.  You think I’m kidding!

Office Space

Finally.  On April 1st we moved into our office space.  It wasn’t till a week later that we had internet and were able to actually USE the office space, but none-the-less.

Needless to say, our wives are ecstatic, and yet somewhat saddened by the departure of their hubbies….only because they can’t call us down from our office to take out the trash, open a jar of jelly, or watch the kid while they jump in the shower.

But the difference is amazing.  Such a synergy.  We have office volunteers helping hold down the front desk…keeps wanting to float away.  And Pastor Daniel, Josh, and I are able to hit the cool intercom button and holler at each other anytime we want.  J. Sich and Ben also have their own desks and extensions.  We feel all legitimate and stuff!

Chunks wrote a great post on getting office space where he said,

"Most church starts are meeting in portable facilities. This is not a
bad thing but one of my strongest recommendations I can give is to get some    offices ASAP.
Not only does it begin to give a nomad church a sense of stability with
those that you are trying to reach but it will make the church more
effective at reaching them."

And in no uncertain terms, he jumped our tail when he found out we didn’t have an office.  Thank you Chunks!

So here is a rough picture of where I work.  Desk is already messy.
